DIY detective work costs amateur sleuth a fortune

A $50 bug on an iPhone cost an amateur detective any claim to his ex-wife's fortune after he recorded her private conversations.

Brooklyn Supreme Court heard that Crocker Coulson used the bug so he could record his estranged wife Anne Resnik in conversation with her lawyer and her therapist in order to gain the upper hand in divorce proceedings.

The existence of the bug was discovered when Resnik's attorney discovered a PayPal transaction in Coulson's accounts to buy a product called OwnSpy. It was then discovered he was accessing the app many times a day during 2014.

Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Jeffrey Sunshine said Coulson had forfeited any rights to a financial settlement due to his “unprecedented, contumacious conduct” and warned others not to abuse the confidentiality between clients and their attorneys or doctors. Coulson could also be facing time in jail for destroying digital evidence of his use of the app.
