Social Media Abuse from Football

Social Media Abuse: How many more footballers to become victims?

Following the conclusion of the footballing weekend, British football has again been tainted by vile social media abuse.

The Guardian confirmed earlier this month that several Twitter users who were banned after the Euro 2020 final were still posting on the platform under altered usernames.

Social media abuse towards footballers is getting out of hand.

Recently, The Rangers have condemned and opened an investigation into an offensive social media video. Football supporters can be seen chanting a racist song about Celtic forward, Kyogo Furuhashi. Celtic are providing full support to the player and have labelled the footage as ‘sickening’ and ‘pathetic.’

Similarly, Arsenal goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale was bombarded with threats and vile remarks after his transfer to the football club. This led to forcing Ramsdale to limit comments on his Instagram page to only verified accounts.

Last week it was also reported that Newcastle United footballer, Joe Willock had confirmed he receives racist abuse on a daily basis. He has called for social media platforms to do more to combat the problem. His manager Steve Bruce has confirmed he will continue to advise all his players to boycott social media. He commented that abusers need to be made accountable for what they are posting and the platforms need to be policed better.
