Just days after the annual peak in enquiries about marital breakdown, Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos and wife MacKenzie have announced they are to divorce after 25 years of marriage.
In a statement published on his Twitter account, Jeff Bezos said the couple had decided to divorce "after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation" and expect to "continue their shared lives as friends."
The pair met when they both worked for a hedge fund, and before Jeff Bezos started Amazon using two computers in their garage in 1994. He is now believed to be the world's richest man with Forbes valuing his net worth as high as $137bn.
Attention will now turn to the divorce settlement with CNBC speculating that MacKenzie, who is an author, is now set to become the richest woman in the world. She is likely to be entitled to half of Jeff's fortune largely based on his 16% ownership of Amazon.
