Investigator proves crucial in unfair dismissal case

An Irish employer has won a case of unfair dismissal after evidence gathered by a private investigator proved crucial to the case.

The employee, who was a Revenue Protection Officer, had a long record of absenteeism following what he claimed was a vehicle accident while carrying out his duties. He claimed his injuries were preventing him from returning to work.

However, a private detective subsequently saw the employee driving himself to a gym, using heavy weights and running on a treadmill without any apparent discomfort.

He was accused of abusing the company's sick pay scheme which was eventually upheld by a tribunal and he was ultimately dismissed.
